The Health and Family Welfare Department of West Bengal on March 08, 2021 has guidelines as well as Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for handling and disposal of Bio Medical Waste (BMW) generated in polling stations during general elections to WBLA, 2021.
The guidelines are as follows:-
1. Prepare a separate route chart for collection of BMW from polling station.
2. Requisition of separate vehicles.
3. The SOP regarding safety measures while handling, lifting and transportation of BMW are as follows: -
• Provide training to the waste handlers on infection prevention measures, hand hygiene, respiratory etiquettes, social distancing, use of PPE etc. via videos and demonstrations etc.
• Workers engaged for lifting waste should be provided PPEs including three-layer masks, splash proof/gowns, nitrile gloves, gum boots and safety goggles.
• Use dedicated trolleys and collection bins.
4. DEOs should hold meeting separately well-in-advance with the established BMW operators of the district.
5. Common Bio Medical Waste Treatment Facility (CBWTF) will be entrusted for lifting of BMW.
