The Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MoEF) on July 06, 2022, appealed to the public regarding the ban of Single Use Plastic in Tamil Nadu under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016.
The following single-use plastic products, including polystyrene and expanded polystyrene, must not be manufactured, imported, stored, distributed, sold, or used:
(a) plastic balloon sticks, plastic flags, chocolates, and earbuds with sticks. sticks, ice cream sticks, and thermocol for decoration made of polystyrene;
(b) utensils such as forks, spoons, knives, plates, cups, glasses, straws, trays, and wrapping or enclosing cigarette packets, invitation cards, and candy boxes in films, less than 100-micron banners made of plastic or PVC, stirrers.
This will come in force from July 01, 2022.

In order to facilitate activities related to the effective implementation of the SUP ban, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has set up a Control Room. (Toll-Free Number to contact 1800 425 6750). The Control Room will operate from 9.30 am – 6.00 pm on all days till July 31, 2022, and will provide assistance, guidance, clarification, and information as may be sought by various stakeholders regarding the ban on SUP items.
