The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) on July 24, 2022, issued a notification regarding the exemption of Ro-Pax/Passenger Ferries from paying Port and Vessel related Charges to major ports for the next six months with immediate effect.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) is promoting Ro-Ro/Ro-Pax/Ferry waterway transportation, which has lower emissions than other modes of transportation for the same amount of cargo. Additionally, there are considerable time and money savings as compared to the conventional forms of transportation. Additionally, there may be a decrease in noise pollution, traffic accidents, and congestion on the roads and trains. Such a water-based transportation service is a practical way to cut logistical costs, shorten travel distances, and encourage coastal trade over several viable routes.
The service of transportation of passengers through inland waterways is exempted from GST as per the Notification No. 12/2017- Central Tax (Rate) dated June 28, 2017.
