The following energy consumption standards have been laid down:

• Every household and similar refrigerating appliances cooled by internal natural convection (Direct Cool) or forced air circulation (Frost Free), and establishes test methods for checking these characteristics as specified in IS 17550 (Part 3) : 2021, being manufactured, commercially purchased, sold or imported, as the case may be, in India shall,-

o comply with the energy consumption requirements defined in clauses 6 of IS 17550 (Part 3) : 2021;

o meet the requirement of total volume as defined in clause 4.8 and Annex H of IS 17550 (Part 3);

o meet the requirement of pull-down test as defined in clause 4.6 a) and Annex A of IS 17550 (Part 2);

o There shall be a label affixed on refrigerator which shall display a maximum of five stars with an interval of one star based on their relative annual energy consumption.

o The refrigerator shall be rated from star one to star five based on their Annual Energy Consumption and which complies with the Annual Energy Consumption requirements as laid down in Table 1 and Table 2.

o The star level of the refrigerator shall be determined as per clause 6 of IS 17550 (Part 3): 2021, as follows, namely:-

Annual Energy Consumption = Daily Energy Consumption in 24 hours *365 days/ 1000

Frost Free Refrigerator’s Daily Energy Consumption (Edaily) includes steady state and incremental energy consumption for defrost and recovery cycle. Direct Cool Refrigerator’s, EDaily includes only steady state conditions.

• Table 1 for Frost Free Refrigerator (Valid from 1st January, 2023 to 31st December, 2024)

• Table 2 for Direct Cool Refrigerator (Valid from 1st January, 2023 to 31st December, 2024)

• Table 3 consists of Serial Number, Nature of Test Test Standard and Clause Reference.
