The Department of Consumer Affairs on October 13, 2022, inviting public consultation for proposed amendments in the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
With Notification No. GSR 779(E) dated November 02, 2021, amendment to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, was made to make doing business easier and to protect consumer interests. It was determined to start using the modified rules on April 1, 2022. Added as Annexure-1 to the document.
Various industry representations were received asking for an extension of the implementation date due to operational issues and the need to comply with the new criteria. The requests were considered and approved, and the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, were subsequently revised to lessen the difficulty of compliance pursuant to Notification No. GSR 226(E) dated March 26, 2022, provided a six-month implementation window beginning on October 1, 2022. The ministry approved an extension of two more months to implement the amended provisions with effect from December 1, 2022, in Notification No. GSR 747(E) dated September 30, 2022, in response to additional requests from industries and to use up the remaining packaging material. The notification is reproduced in Annexure 3.
Further modifications to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 are being considered in light of requests from industries for increased business efficiency and a lighter compliance burden while also safeguarding consumer interests. All interested parties, including the following, are asked to provide public feedback on the draft included as Annexure-4 to the document.
