The University Grants Commission (UGC), on January 27, 2023, issued a notification regarding NEP 2020 recommendation on Adult Education 'New India Literacy Programme (NILP)'.
In order to achieve the objective of Adult Literacy, there is a need of involving students from all the HEIs in the robust implementation of the New India Literacy Programme to eradicate illiteracy in be country. For this purpose, students need to be involved as Volunteer Teachers from the next academic session who can take on voluntarily teaching 3-4 non-literates of 15 years and above per year.
To achieve the objective of NEP 2020, HELs are requested to harness their huge potential & resources to contribute to the achievement of 100% of literacy & execute the following academic mandates:
I.All universities with Departments/ Centres of Adult Education/ Continuing Education/ Lifelong Learning Extension may include mandatory teaching of at least 5 or above non-literates by students in every academic year in their course work as a project or assignment for completion of their degree.
II.All other organizations/institutions under UGC offering Under Graduate, Post-Graduate, and other higher academic courses may include certain credits for the activity. The credits may be given after the leaders under them get a "literate certificate.
III.A provision for issuing certificates to such volunteers from University/State Government can be made to encourage students,
IV.The Universities/HEIs can train students to carry out the activities as per the guidelines of NILP.
