The Department of Food and Public Distribution (Directorate of Sugar & Vegetable Oils) on April 24, 2023, issued a notification regarding Compliance of Packaging of Sugar in jute packaging material as per provision of jute Packaging Material (Compulsory use in Packaging use in packaging commodities) Act, 1987 and submission of monthly return by sugar mills on packaging of sugar in jute packaging material by sugar mills.
As per the recent decision, 20% of the total production of Sugar is to be mandatorily packed in the jute packaging material under the provision of the JPM Act, 1987.
The Central Government in the exercise of powers conferred by Section 13 of the RPM Act, 1987 has delegated the powers to the officers vide notification S.O. 145 (E) dated 10th May, 2011 where by powers related to sugar across the country have been delegated to the Director (Sugar).
Since, the implementation of the provision of the JPM Act, 1987 in respect of Sugar is being reviewed at the highest level of Government, therefore, it has been decided that Sugar Mills shall ensure the implementation of provision of JPM Act and to strictly adhere to 20% packaging of Sugar in jute Packaging material.
