The Government of Andaman and Nicobar on April 22, 2023, issued a notification regarding the Publication/ telecast of the News on Precautionary measures for Tsunami
The following Precautionary measures have been stated namely: -
• Do's: -
(i) Pay attention to tsunami warnings: If you live in a coastal area or are visiting one, make sure to be aware of any tsunami warnings issued by the authorities.
(ii) Move to higher ground: If a tsunami warning is issued, move to higher ground immediately. Do not wait for official instructions or for the wave to arrive.
(iii) Follow evacuation orders: If authorities issue an evacuation order, follow it immediately. Do not delay or hesitate.
(iv) Stay tuned to local news: Stay tuned to local news and radio stations for updates on the situation.
(v) Be prepared: Have an emergency kit ready, including food, water, medications, and important documents.
• Don'ts: -
(i) Don't stay in low-lying areas: If you are in a low-lying area and a tsunami warning is issued, do not stay there. Move to higher ground immediately.
(ii) Don't go to the coast to watch the wave: Tsunamis are not a spectator sport. Stay away from the coast and do not go there to watch the wave.
(iii) Don't use the beach as a shelter: Do not use the beach or shoreline as a shelter during a tsunami. The wave can be much higher than the normal tide level and can quickly flood the area.
(iv) Don't use elevators: If you are in a building during a tsunami, do not use the elevators. Use the stairs instead.
(v) Don't return to the area until it is safe: After a tsunami, do not return to the area until authorities declare it safe to do so.
