The University Grants Commission (UGC) on May 25, 2023, issued a notification regarding the maintenance of standards of Higher Education in the Country
The following has been stated namely: -
• The UGC has notified Two of the Regulations which specify the minimum eligibility conditions for the appointment/promotion of teachers and award of Ph.D. degrees and are currently in operation as follows namely: -
(i) UGC Regulations on Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and Other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education, 2018.
(ii) University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022
• It states that these Regulations are mandatory, and all Higher Education Institutions need to follow these Regulations to appoint/promote teachers and award Ph.D. degrees. However, once in a while, violations of the above Regulations by HEIs are brought to the notice of UGC.
• It further states that a Standing Committee has been constituted to take appropriate measures to curb the violations of UGC Regulations
• The Stakeholders are now informed that any violations of Regulations by HEIs may kindly be sent to the following address: [email protected]
• The Standing Committee will meet at fixed intervals, look into the complaints, scrutinize the documents of HEIs, and recommend appropriate action to be taken by the UGC on the HEIs violating the Regulations.
• All HEIs are requested to follow the UGC Regulations and ensure that teachers are appointed with adequate qualifications and that PhDs are awarded in adherence to the minimum standards set by the UGC.
