The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on May 22, 2023, issued a notification to seek comments/suggestions regarding the Draft Guidelines for Recognition of Environmental Laboratories Under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
An Environmental Laboratory plays a key role in the identification and quantification of the components present in the environment created due to natural as well as anthropogenic activities. The environmental laboratory processes the samples taken from the environmental media (air, water, soil, biota) both from the environment as well as from sources disposed into the environment (industries, domestic and agriculture sources, automobiles, etc.).
A large number of environmental laboratories have been established or recognized under Air and Water Act to perform their functions to safeguard environmental concerns including the analysis of water and air samples. Under the Environment (Protection) Act also, the Central Government has made a provision to establish or recognize environmental laboratories by notification, to carry out the functions entrusted to an environmental laboratory under this Act.
