The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on June 16, 2023, issued a notification regarding the Enforcement of Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016
The following has been stated namely: -
• It states that the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has notified the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021, which prohibits the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale, and use of the following single-use plastic items such as candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, and cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 micron and stirrers, which have low utility and high littering potential w.e.f. July 01, 2022.
• The MoEF&CC has also informed vide ibid OM that the use of packing films around sweet boxes is prohibited as per Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021.
• it is requested to instruct the concerned Food Safety Officers and Designated Officers under your respective jurisdictions to ensure effective compliance with the above rules and no packing films are used to wrap/pack sweet boxes by any food business operator.
• It Further states that in order to ensure self-compliance, the concerned FBOs should also be made aware of the said prohibition by giving wide publicity to the said amendment.
