Industry Specific ComplianceThe Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) on July 14, 2023, issued a notification regarding the verification of completion of oil spill removal from (capsizing/sinking/collision, etc.) vessels.

The following has been stated namely: -

• This is during cases of maritime casualty, leading to sinking, capsizing, damage, etc. of vessels, which endangers Indian waters by oil pollution from such vessels.

• The directorate coordinates with stakeholders such as Owner, Charterer, Operator, Agent, Master, and Crew, urging them to take immediate actions to control and prevent pollution, such action when pertaining to such vessels may include removal of oil from the vessel.

• The responsibility for the effectiveness and efficacy of the actions rests with the concerned agency or authority.

• It is the responsibility of the concerned authority or agency for ensuring that all the oil has been duly removed from the said vessel.
