The Ministry of Power (MoP) on July 27, 2023, issued a notification directing Thermal Plants to comply with the emission norms.
The following has been stated namely: -
• The Timelines for SO2 compliance for non-retiring Thermal Power Plants for compliance to emission norms has been stated:
1. Category A – Up to December 31, 2024
2. Category B – Up to December 31, 2025
3. Category C – Up to December 31, 2026
• The compensation on the non-retiring thermal power plants for non-compliance beyond the specified timelines has been prescribed. The following Environmental Compensation (Rs. per unit electricity generated) for Non-Compliant operation beyond the Timeline has been stated namely: -
1. 0 – 180 days – Rs. 0.20
2. 181 – 365 days – Rs. 0.30
3. 366 days and beyond – Rs. 0.40
