The Government of Assam on August 23, 2023, issued a notification to prohibit the use of plastic drinking bottles and other Single Use Plastic items in Government Offices.
The following has been stated:
• To prohibit usage of packaged drinking water bottles and banned SUP items in meetings and functions of all Government Departments and their sub-ordinate offices/organisations, Educational and Research Institutes, Public Sector Undertakings, Autonomous Bodies etc. including those programs held in venues outside the office premises with immediate effect.
• As an alternative, it is suggested to use drinking water from large dispensers or reusable water bottles and use reusable or eco-friendly crockery and cutlery instead of single-use Plastic (SUP) items.
Further, all senior Secretaries are hereby requested to take action enthusiastically to eliminate single-use plastics from their departments in order to set an example for the public across the State of Assam.
