The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) on October 12, 2023, published the Draft Eco mark Certification Rules, 2023
These rules aim to promote environmentally friendly products and ensure their environmental performance in terms of resource consumption and environmental impacts, particularly the impact on climate change, nature and biodiversity, energy consumption, waste generation, emissions to all environmental media, pollution through physical effects, and the use and release of hazardous substances.
The following has been stated namely: -
• It states that this shall be applicable to any product which is produced or supplied for distribution, or use in the market, unless otherwise excluded under the Ecomark Certification Rules.
• The following objectives of the rules have been stated namely: -
(i) The Ecomark Rules are intended to encourage the demand for environmentally friendly products that cause lesser adverse impacts on the environment thereby supporting the principles of ‘LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment)’, promoting resource efficiency & circular economy, and preventing misleading information on environmental aspects of products.
(ii) To build consumer awareness on environmental issues and of the implications of their choices, thereby generating a change towards more environmentally friendly behavior and consumption patterns.
(iii) To encourage manufacturers to transition to production of Ecomark-certified products.
(iv) To prevent misleading and deceptive information with respect to the fraudulent use of the Ecomark label.
These Draft Rules shall be taken into consideration after the expiry of 30 days from the date of publication of this notification
Objections or Suggestions from any person with respect to the draft are invited and shall be considered before the expiry of 30 days from the date of publication of this notification
