The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation, (PESO) on October 17, 2023, issued a notification regarding fireworks of foreign origin.
The Government has been made aware of the unlawful importation of fireworks of foreign origin into India, falsely declared on past occasions. It is crucial to note that fireworks in India have been classified as restricted items under the ITC (HS) for import purposes. As of now, no licenses for the import, possession, or sale of fireworks have been issued in accordance with the Explosives Rules, 2008 by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation.
These smuggled foreign fireworks often contain the hazardous chemical 'Potassium Chlorate,' which has the potential to spontaneously ignite or explode. These fireworks can pose a significant threat, leading to severe accidents, endangering lives, and causing various environmental and health issues in the country.
In the interest of safeguarding human lives and property, the government urges the general public and stakeholders to promptly report any information regarding the possession or sale of such fireworks to the nearest Police Station or District Authorities, enabling appropriate action to be taken.
