The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on October 30, 2023, issued a Direction regarding the source of iron salts prescribed for Vitamin and mineral premix and fortified Rice Kernel (FRK)-reg.
The following has been stated:
• This has a reference to the Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018 w.r.t to standards for Fortified Rice. Further, the FSS (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulation, 2011 prescribed standards for 'Rice Flour for preparation of FRK', 'Vitamin-Mineral Premix for Preparation of FRK', and 'Fortified Rice Kernel' were operationalized from June 23, 2022.
• It is stated that Food Business Operators (FBOs) specify the exact ingredient in the list of ingredients on the label/accompanying document in case of Retail/Non-retail containers, as the case may be, in accordance with the provisions outlined in the FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020 and FSS (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018.
