EHS ComplianceThe Government of Tamil Nadu on October 30, 2023, issued a notification to ban the use of nylon thread coated with Glass/Chinese Manjha during festivals or other occasions in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The Hon'ble National Green Tribunal (PB), New Delhi vide its orders dated July 11, 2017, passed in Original Application No. 384 of 2016, and Original Application No. 442 of 2016 MA. Nos. 1247/2016 and 317 of 2017 in the case of Khalid Ashraf & Anr. Vs Union of India and others and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India Vs. Union of India and others has directed that: -

• There shall be a total ban on the manjha or thread for kite flying which is made of nylon or any synthetic material and/or coated with synthetic substances and is non-biodegradable.

• All the Chief Secretaries / Administration of the State Governments and Union Territories are directed to enforce the prohibition of the manufacture and use of synthetic manjha/nylon thread for kite flying throughout their state/ territories. 

• The respondents are directed to ban the import of any synthetic manjha/nylon thread or similar thread coated with synthetic substances in any part of the country.

Whoever fails to comply with or contravenes any of the above orders/directions shall be liable to be penalized under the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. 

The above directions shall come into force from October 30, 2023.
