The Government of Tamil Nadu on August 09, 2023, notified regarding the permission for fishing with purse seine nets within the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) along the 12 nautical mile coastline of Tamil Nadu and the order was passed by the Hon'ble Supreme Court.
The permission was granted subject to the following conditions:
• Permit will be granted only to fishing vessels registered as of date, i.e. fishing vessels registered under Section 11 of the Marine Products Export Promotion Authority Act, 1972 and registered under the rules or regulations for the time being in force of the State of Tamil Nadu.
• Approved tracking devices (Vessel Tracking System- VTS) by the Fisheries Department only for boats equipped Permission must be granted. Equipment for boat sailing Must be operational in time.
• The fishing vessels are allowed to operate only twice a week. This means fishing is allowed only on Monday and Thursday every week. All other restrictions such as fishing closures apply.
• The Fishing vessels to whom this permit is issued shall depart from the coast at or after 8 a.m. and evening on the same day. Return ashore to an authorized location within 6 hours

• The State Fisheries Department should provide colour coding for short-haul fishing boats.
• The registration number of these fishing boats should be clearly visible and should be written. In order to ensure that these vessels have fished only within the territorial waters of the State, each vessel shall carry out surveillance for fishing trips after each return to shore.
