The Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) on November 21, 2023, issued a notification regarding the Employees State Insurance Scheme.
The following has been stated: -
•The Employees' State Scheme is an integrated measure of Social Insurance embodied in the Employees' State Insurance Act and is designed for the task of protecting 'employees' as defined in the Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948 against the impact of sickness, and death due to injury and to provide medical care to insured persons and their families.
•The Central Govt. has extended the coverage under Section 1(5) to Shops, Hotels, Road Motor Transport establishments, Cinema including preview theatres, Newspaper, engaged Insurance Businesses, Non-Banking Companies, Port Trusts, Airport Authorities, establishments employing 20 or more Persons, where Central Govt. is the appropriate Govt. The existing wage limit for coverage under the Act, effective from 01.01.2017, is ₹21,000/per month (₹25,000/per month in the case of Persons with disability)
•The main benefits provided under the ESI Scheme Are Sickness Benefits, Disablement Benefits, Dependents benefits Maternity Benefits,s and Medical Benefits.
• The ESI Scheme stands implemented in 656 districts in 36 states and the Union of the country. Presently, the Act applies to over 15.94 lakhs factories and establishments across the country, benefiting over 3.42 crores of Insured Persons/family units. The total stands at over 13.30 crores.
