Industry Specific ComplianceThe Ministry of Law and Justice (MoL&J) on November 24, 2023, issued the Lakshadweep Tenancy Regulation, 2023.

The following provisions have been stated:

• Rights and obligations of successor in case of death:

The terms of the agreement executed between landlord and tenant shall be binding upon their successors in the event of the death of the landlord or tenant and in such case, the successors of the deceased landlord or tenant shall have the same rights and obligations as agreed to in the tenancy agreement for the remaining period of such tenancy.

• Rent payable:

(1) The rent payable in respect of premises shall be the rent agreed to between the landlord and the tenant in accordance with the terms of the tenancy agreement.

(2) All rent, deposits, and other charges payable shall be made by either bank deposit, electronic transfer, cheque, demand draft, postal money order, or such other method as may be prescribed, which can be verified by the Rent Authority, the Rent Court, the Rent Tribunal and such other authority as may be prescribed.

• Original tenancy agreement to be retained by landlord and tenant:

The tenancy agreement shall be signed in duplicate by both the landlord and tenant and each one of such originally signed tenancy agreements shall be retained by the landlord and tenant.

This notification will come into force on such date as the Administrator may, by notification in the Official Gazette appoint.
