The Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoL&E) on December 07, 2023, issued a Press Release regarding the Formulation of welfare schemes for gig and platform workers
The following has been stated namely: -
• It states that the Social Security Code, 2020 aims towards framing suitable social security schemes by Central Government for Gig workers and platform workers on matters relating to the following namely: -
(i) Life and disability cover
(ii) accident insurance
(iii) health and maternity benefits
(iv) Old age protection
(v) crèche
(vi) any other benefit as may be determined by the Central Government.
• It states that the Centre for Labour Studies, National Law School of India University (NLSUI), Bangalore has been engaged for assistance in framing a new Scheme for the Gig and platform workers as well as workers in the unorganized Sector
• It further states that the provisions under the Code relating to gig and platform workers are yet to come into force.
