The Ministry of Steel on December 07, 2023, issued a circular regarding the Capability to supply various steel grades/products to the domestic user industries.
The following has been stated: -
•The Ministry of Steel has notified Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order under (QCO) the BIS Act, 2016. Periodically the Ministry issues such QCO orders to cover more grades of steel and related products.
•Import from only BIS-licensed sources is allowed for steel grades covered under the QCO. The decision w.r.t. the applicability of QCO on any steel grade is taken by the Technical Committee constituted by M/o Steel (w.e.f. October 2018), and exemptions thereof are given by the Empowered Committee.
•The Empowered Committee has identified the grades where there is domestic demand and requests for imports are being made citing various constraints. The brief description is given in the document attached below.
•In this regard, the relevant BIS-licensed steel manufacturers, capable of supplying the aforementioned steel grade/products may inform their capabilities of the Ministry.
