EHS ComplianceThe Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) on December 15, 2023, issued the Environment (Protection) Sixth Amendment Rules, 2023 to further amend the Environment (Protection) Rules, 1986.

The following amendments have been stated:

• In SCHEDULE-I, which states “Standards for Emission or Discharge of Environmental Pollutants” in the entry at Sl. No. 74, for note no. 2, the following entry has been substituted, namely: 

"2. The existing brick kilns which are not follow zig-zag technology or vertical shaft or use piped natural gas as fuel in brick making shall be converted to zig-zag technology or vertical shaft or use piped natural gas as fuel in brick making within a period of:

(a) 1-year w.e.f. February 23, 2023, in case of kilns located within 10 kilometres radius of non-attainment cities; except those located in million-plus population cities, NCR districts, and critically & severely polluted areas as categorised by CPCB;

(b) 1-year w.e.f. February 23, 2024, in case of other kilns.

Provided that in the case where the Commission for Air Quality Management/Central Pollution Control Board/State Pollution Control Board /Pollution Control Committee has separately issued more stringent Norms/timelines, such orders shall prevail."

This notification will come into force from December 15, 2023.
