Industry Specific ComplianceThe Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) on February 12, 2024, notified various amendments to the MARPOL Convention.

The Merchant Shipping Act, 1958, as amended incorporates the Convention and is defined in Section 356 B 9 (e) as the "International Convention for the prevention of pollution from ships, 1973, including its Protocol of 1978 as amended from time to time. Further, the mandatory Codes as indicated in the Convention and its amendments from time to time are in effect and applicable to the vessels.

IMO has issued various amendments to MARPOL from time to time which are annexed to this order at "Annexure-I, Annexure -ll, Annexure -lll. As defined in the Merchant Shipping Act, such amendments to the convention are already in effect and applicable to Indian vessels.

The Directorate intends to issue guidance concerning all the amendments that entered into force since the notification of M.S. Prevention of Pollution by Oil from Ships in 2010.

The stakeholders are therefore required to be guided by this order and earlier orders/circulars/notices towards compliance with the provisions to give full effect to the "International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1 973, including its protocol of 1978”.
