Industry Specific ComplianceThe Government of West Bengal on January 15, 2024, issued a circular regarding the declaration of tea waste.

The following has been stated: -

•At present, tea waste is being utilized as raw material for producing instant tea, bio-fertilizer, and caffeine. However, in order to streamline the usage of tea waste Board is in the process of allowing tea waste only for the production of instant tea or for export purposes.

•Tea waste other than export and for manufacturing of instant tea should either be destroyed or composted by the manufacturers. Necessary amendment proposal of Tea (Waste) Control Order, 1959 in this respect shall be made soon to the Ministry of Commerce & Industry.

• The board has also decided to channel the selling of entire tea waste through electronic auction. Accordingly, all the producers are requested to offer tea waste generated by them entirely through auction w.e.f. April 01, 2024. The unsold waste should be destroyed or composted without fail.
