The Government of Maharashtra on March 14, 2024, notified regarding the Marathi language policy of the state of Maharashtra for the next 25 years to suggest new measures and programs for language development and to guide the government in this sense. According to the government decision dated June 22, 2010, a permanent Language Advisory Committee has been established under the Directorate of Languages. The said Language Advisory Committee was entrusted with the task of drafting the language policy.
The Marathi language policy draft was approved by the Cabinet in its meeting dated March 13, 2024, the Marathi language policy of the state is being approved by this government decision.
The thought of Marathi language is a vital principle related to the history, culture and overall life of Maharashtra. Maharashtra's relationship with Marathi language is biological in nature. Therefore, the use of Marathi language is not only a question of identity but also a question of existence of Marathi people. Also, this question is related to the life of the common man and the development of Maharashtra. Keeping this in mind, the following goals have been fixed.
• By the centenary year of Indian independence (2047) i.e. in the next 25 years or so, establishing Marathi language with its inherent strength as the language of knowledge and employment.
• To make Marathi medium available in optional form along with English for higher education in all disciplines like science, technology, agriculture, medicine, law and engineering etc.
• Setting up language laboratories at various places to develop the linguistic ability of Marathi speakers.
• The state government will continuously strive to preserve and promote the dialects of Marathi language which are the linguistic and cultural heritage of the state.
• All necessary measures to equip Marathi language with new technology will be done through Directorate of Information Technology.
• The central government will give all efforts to get the status of Marathi language as classical language. For this a committee will be formed on behalf of the state government.
• To support the linguistic activities of the Marathi speakers of Greater Maharashtra in order to preserve and promote the Marathi language in the state and outside the country.
• To create confidence in the public about Marathi language.
• To develop the Marathi language of administrative dealings which can be understood by common people.
• All the essentials for the development of Marathi language by exploring the challenges facing Marathi language to take measures.
• Special efforts will be made by all departments of the government to spread the Marathi language, literature and art culture in the state, country and the world and Marathi will be established as an important language at the national and global level.
