The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (MoCAF&PD) on May 22, 2024, notified regarding the Compliance of packaging of sugar in Jute Packaging material as per the provisions of Jute Packaging Material (Compulsory Use in Packing Commodities) Act, 1987.
The following has been stated:
• It has directed all the sugar mills to assess their requirements for jute bags based on the sugar produced during Sugar Season 2023-24 and take necessary steps for procurement of jute bags before the commencement of the next sugar season 2024-25.
• It has also been directed that sugar mills should package the sugar produced during the month of October-December-2024 in Jute bags first, up to 20% of sugar produced during Sugar Season 2023-24 and then use other packaging material.
• Non-compliance of the directions issued by this Directorate for Jute packaging of 20% of sugar produced during the current sugar season 2024-25, will be viewed seriously and no monthly release quota from January 2025 onwards to the sugar mills to the non-compliant sugar mills.
