The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAHD) on June 05, 2024, issued the Draft Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Transport of Animals on Foot) (Amendment) Rules, 2024. This is to further amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Transport of Animals on Foot) Rules, 2001.
The following has been amended namely: -
• Rule 2 which states definitions, the following has been inserted namely: -
o Adult Camel: for the purposes of this chapter unless the context other requires, means the animal covered under the family Camelidae including Bactrian, Dromedary, and Wild Bactrian, both male and female including its progeny
o Baby Camel: means camel below the age of two years.
• Rule 12 which states “Certain Prohibition on transport of animals on foot”, the following proviso has been inserted in sub-rule (1): -
“Provided in respect of Camel, the night marching shall be preferred during the period when the temperature increased beyond the specified maximum temperature mentioned in sub-rule (2) of this Rule, to avoid heat shocks.”
Any suggestions, objections or modifications may be sent to the Joint Secretary (Animal Welfare), Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, within 30 days from June 05, 2024.
