The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on July 05, 2024, issued a notification regarding the requirements for firms involved in manufacturing/ job working/ processing/ packing/ branding of Stainless Steel Utensils to implement the Cookware, Utensils and Cans for Foods and Beverages (Quality Control) Order, 2024.
The following has been stated namely: -
• It provides that manufacturers of stainless steel utensils shall ensure compliance with IS 14756:2022, requiring BIS-certified raw materials (IS: 5522 or IS: 15997) with traceable test certificates, applicable to both finished and semi-finished utensil production.
• It provides that firms manufacturing stainless steel utensils shall obtain a BIS license at their premises and ensure raw material conformity as per IS: 14756, with proper traceability and periodic testing, if procuring unfinished/semi-finished utensils for further processing.
• It provides that firms engaged in job-working on raw materials for utensils shall adhere to IS: 14756, supplying unfinished/semi-finished utensils only to BIS-licensed manufacturers, ensuring raw material conformity and traceability with test certificates for each consignment.
