The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), on July 26, 2024, issued a notification regarding the Direction under Section 16(5) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 regarding the re-operationalization of Draft Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations related to standards of Packaged Drinking Water (other than Mineral Water).
The provisions related to permissible limits of calcium, magnesium, and total dissolved solids in packaged drinking water were re-operationalized via direction dated March 12, 2024.
The Food Authority has approved the final amendment regulations in its 42nd meeting. They are in the process of approval for final notification, which is expected to take more time for its publication in the Gazette of India. Meanwhile, to allow the FBOs to formulate Packaged Drinking Water (other than Mineral Water), it has been decided to re-operationalize the provision specified in the document with effect from July 01, 2024.
