The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on August 29, 2024, issued a notification regarding the fraudulent Activities in its name.
It has also identified various fraudulent schemes where scammers impersonate RBI officials using fake letterheads, emails, and other means to deceive the public. These fraudsters lure victims with false promises of lottery winnings, government schemes, or business contracts, requiring them to pay fees or deposits. Additionally, scammers use intimidating tactics, such as threatening to freeze bank accounts or implicate individuals in illegal activities, to obtain personal and financial information. Some unauthorized websites and apps also falsely claim accreditation from the RBI.
In response, the RBI has clarified that it does not hold individual accounts, send emails about lottery winnings, or request money transfers under any pretext. The public is urged to be cautious of any communication from individuals claiming to represent the RBI or other government agencies, especially those seeking personal or financial details. The RBI advises the public to verify any claims of RBI accreditation through its official website and to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement authorities.
