The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) on September 23, 2024, issued Policy Guidelines on use of Inert Material in construction of National Highways.
The disposal of solid waste generated daily is a major environmental challenge being faced in urban areas across the country. As per a rough assessment, around 10000 Ha of land is locked in dump sites. Due to limited land availability, these landfill sites are on the verge of attaining maximum capacity and pose serious environmental and Health Hazards.
To resolve the problem of disposal of urban solid waste and mounting the requirement of earth for the construction of embankments, MoRTH through NHAI has undertaken two pilot projects for the utilization of Inert Material which is one of the major components of municipal solid waste. The first pilot project was in Delhi- NCR on Urban Extension road and DND Sohna spur of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. In 2nd pilot project, Inert Solid Waste material was used on the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway. In both cases, the construction of the embankment has been carried out as per the laid down procedure with strict quality control.
