The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission, (KERC) on October 09, 2024, Draft KERC (Implementation of rooftop aero turbine with solar or without solar) Regulations, 2024.
The following has been stated-
•The Electricity Act, 2003 mandates the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission to promote renewable energy, including co-generation and electricity generation from renewable sources like wind and solar. Sections 86(1)(e) and 61(h) of the Act guide the Commission to ensure grid connectivity and tariff determination that promotes renewable energy. Additionally, Sections 62(1)(a), 64, and 86(1)(b) provide the framework for regulating electricity procurement processes and tariffs for distribution licensees, while Section 181 allows the Commission to make regulations in line with the Act’s objectives.
•Rooftop Aero Turbine (RAT) technology, which generates electricity using wind power in urban or suburban areas, is being introduced as part of Karnataka's Renewable Energy Policy 2022-27. These small-scale turbines, which can operate alongside solar power, are designed to harness low wind speeds and turbulent conditions found in built-up environments, offering a sustainable energy solution for residential use.
•KERC has published draft regulations for the implementation of rooftop aero turbines with or without solar, inviting stakeholders to submit feedback. The draft regulations will be finalized after 30 days from the date of their publication in the official gazette, with objections and suggestions to be submitted to the Commission’s Secretary within the same timeframe.
