The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPS&W) on October 29, 2024, issued the Draft Inland Vessels (Prevention and Containment of Pollution) (First Amendment) Rules, 2024, to further amend the Inland Vessels (Prevention and Containment of Pollution) Rules, 2022.
The following has been stated namely: -
• In rule 2 after clause (c) which states the definition of Inland Vessel, the following explanation shall be inserted-
“Explanation. - For the purpose of this sub-rule, Gross Tonnage of vessels above 24 meters shall be calculated according to International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships, 1969 whereas Gross Tonnage of vessels less than 24 meters shall be calculated according to Rule 2 of the Merchant Shipping (Tonnage Measurement of Ships) Rules, 1991.”
• In rule 6 which states about the Equipment Standards and Guidance, the words “International Organisation of Standards”, shall be substituted with the words “International Organization for Standardization”.
• In rule 12 which states about the Sewage, sub-rule (3) shall be substituted with “(3) Vessels engaged on voyages of less than 60 minutes duration may be exempted from requirements contained in sub-rule (2).”
