The Ministry of Steel on November 27, 2024, issued a notification regarding Steel Imports and Quality Control Measures.
The following has been stated: -
•The Steel imports into India have risen by 41.3% in the first half of 2024-25, with concerns that cheaper imports may depress domestic prices, impacting both large and small steel producers.
•The Ministry of Steel, in consultation with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), ensures that only quality steel is produced or imported by enforcing BIS standards and Quality Control Orders. Steel grades not covered by these standards can only be imported from the Ministry with a No Objection Certificate (NOC).
•The rise in imports and attempts to bypass these standards may harm the steel industry and hinder India's capacity expansion goals.
