The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on December 03, 2024, issued an advisory for E-commerce Food Business Operators (FBOs) on Strengthening Food Safety Compliance.
E-commerce food business operators (FBOs) must prioritize the training of delivery personnel in food safety and hygiene to prevent contamination, including proper handling, transportation, and personal hygiene. Food and non-food items must be delivered separately to avoid cross-contamination.
Product claims on e-commerce platforms must align with the product’s physical label to avoid misleading information, ensuring compliance with FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020. Additionally, food products must have at least 30% shelf life remaining or 45 days before expiry at the time of delivery.
E-commerce platforms should display FSSAI License/Registration numbers and Hygiene Ratings of sellers to build consumer trust and ensure transparency. No FBO can list a seller without their valid FSSAI credentials.
