The Ministry of Steel on December 24, 2024, issued a notification regarding Taxonomy for Green Steel in India.
The following has been stated: -
•The Taxonomy for Green Steel in India defines "Green Steel" based on emission intensity, with ratings ranging from one to five stars, depending on CO2e emissions per tonne of finished steel.
•Steel plants must meet specific emission thresholds to qualify for certification, and the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST) will manage measurement, reporting, and certification.
•A fee is charged for registration and certification, and the process includes emissions from Scope 1, Scope 2, and limited Scope 3. Star ratings will be reviewed every three years.
