The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on January 08, 2025, issued modification in the United Nations (Privileges and Immunities) Act, 1947.
The Government of India signed two agreements with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on February 02, 2009: one for the application of safeguards to India's civilian nuclear facilities, effective from May 11, 2009, and another on the privileges and immunities of the IAEA. These agreements grant the IAEA and its representatives certain privileges, including exemptions from customs duties and restrictions on imports and exports for official use. The Indian government has decided to extend additional privileges and immunities under the United Nations (Privileges and Immunities) Act, 1947, to the IAEA and its representatives.
The Central Government hereby declares that the provisions of Articles I to VIII of the Schedule to the United Nations (Privileges and Immunities) Act, 1947 shall apply, mutatis mutandis, to the International Atomic Energy Agency and to its representatives and officials, subject to the following modifications, namely:-
• In the Schedule to the said Act, for the words “The United Nations” and “Secretary General” wherever they occur, the words “International Atomic Energy Agency” and “Director General” shall respectively be substituted.
