The Labour Department, Delhi on January 02, 2025, issued a notification regarding the amendment to the Delhi Shops and Establishments Act, 1954: New Guidelines for Employee Working Hours and Benefits.
The following has been stated: -
•The Lt. Governor of Delhi has amended the Delhi Shops and Establishments Act, 1954, adding a new provision for certain establishments. It stipulates that employees should not work more than nine hours a day or 48 hours a week, with overtime paid at double the regular rate.
•Shift work should avoid night shifts only, and employers must ensure safety, security, and transportation for overtime workers.
•Legal benefits like minimum wages, PF, ESI, and leave must be provided, and payment should be made via cheque/ECS. The exemption granted does not override other governmental regulations.
