The Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu Administration, Office of the Regional Publicity Officer, Information & Publicity on February 01, 2025, issued an advisory regarding using the name “Press Council”.
It has come to the knowledge of the Press Council of India (PCI), New Delhi that certain press organisations are using the term "Press Council", which has not only eroded the institutional value of the Press Council of India but also infringes upon its unique domain and title.
The Department of Legal Affairs, New Delhi, has opined that the usage of the term "Press Council" or its Hindi equivalent "भारतीय प्रेस परिषद" by any other organisation without the permission of the Central Government is in violation of Section 3 read with Entry 7(ii) of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950.
The following has been advised:
• All concerned authorities must take necessary steps to prohibit and rectify the registration of any local or government association/body using the name "Press Council" or "भारतीय प्रेस परिषद".
• Organizations or individuals currently using this term without authorisation must cease such usage immediately to avoid legal consequences.
• Strict action will be taken against any entity found misusing the name of the Press Council of India in violation of the law.
