The Directorate General of Shipping on February 13, 2025, issued the Draft Recycling of Ships Regulations, 2025.
The following has been stated namely: -
• It provides that the National Authority is responsible for overseeing and regulating ship recycling activities within its jurisdiction, ensuring compliance with environmental, safety, and health standards. It develops policies, communicates with the IMO, investigates incidents, enforces regulations, and coordinates efforts to promote sustainable, "green" ship recycling practices.
• It states that the regulations shall apply to all ship recycling facilities within India, Indian ships intended for recycling in any yard (domestic or foreign), and Indian shipbuilding and repair yards.
• The Hong Kong Convention is scheduled to come into force on June 26, 2025. In preparation for ship recycling regulations, the draft has been uploaded on the DGS website for public comments, with a 15-day submission period. Comments if any to be sent to [email protected].
