The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization, (PESO), on January 20, 2025, issued a notification regarding the Guidelines to be followed for the installation of Electric Vehicle Charging/Battery Swapping facilities in a Retail Outlet (Petroleum Service Station).
The installation of EV Charging/Battery Swapping facilities shall be permitted only if adequate space is available and safety is not compromised. These facilities must not be located in hazardous zones and should have a dedicated vehicle parking area marked in the site layout. Additionally, they should not obstruct vehicle movement within the retail outlet or be installed above underground petroleum storage tanks.
To ensure safety, minimum distances must be maintained from critical petroleum infrastructure. For instance, a 3-meter gap is required from the fill point of underground petroleum storage tanks, while 6 to 9 meters of clearance is mandated from dispensing units, unloading platforms, and ALDS/LNG/CNG/LPG installations. These measures aim to facilitate EV infrastructure expansion while ensuring operational safety at petroleum retail outlets.
