The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on March 12, 2025, notified 187 Quality Control Orders covering 769 products under compulsory certification.
The Government of India, in coordination with various Ministries and sectors, is formulating and updating Indian Standards to ensure quality and safety. With approximately 23,000 Indian Standards in force, compliance with certain standards is made mandatory through Quality Control Orders (QCOs).
A total of 187 QCOs covering 769 products have been notified for compulsory BIS certification by regulators and line ministries. The Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (QCO), 2024, and Machinery and Electrical Equipment Safety (Omnibus Technical Regulation) Order, 2024, have also been introduced to enhance safety and quality of electrical appliances and machinery.
Of the 22,689 standards in force, 10,300 have corresponding ISO/IEC standards, and 9,616 Indian Standards (93.3%) have been harmonized with ISO/IEC standards. The implementation of QCOs depends on the requirements of the concerned Ministries/Departments, ensuring conformity to BIS standards under the BIS Act, 2016.
