The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) on March 12, 2025, notified regarding the Recommended Standards for Shore to Ship Power Supply (SPS) at Indian Ports and Ships.
The following has been stated namely: -
• This circular applies to all major and non-major ports in India and all ships calling at these ports, irrespective of their flag, covering technical, safety, and operational standards for implementing SPS systems.
• It aims to align with IMO standards (MEPC Resolutions 207(62) and 377(79)) for SPS and to promote SPS adoption to support India's decarbonization goals under the "Harit-Sagar" Guidelines 2023, MIV-2030, and MAKV-2047, aiming for carbon-neutral ports and widespread shore power use by 2035.
• It states that Ports and ships shall follow the SPS standards in Appendix-1 to ensure uniform implementation, aligning with India's Maritime Vision 2030 and phased OPS targets (2023-2035), while Appendix-2 details carbon certification procedures to verify emissions reductions and support future carbon credit schemes.
• To ensure seamless implementation and operation of SPS systems, it provides integrated standards and guidelines.
