The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPS&W) on March 24, 2025, issued the Draft Inland Vessels (National River Traffic and Navigation System) Rules, 2025.
The following has been stated namely: -
• Objections or suggestions, if any, to these draft rules may be sent to the Deputy Secretary (IWT), Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Room No. 547, Transport Bhawan, 1-Parliament Street, New Delhi-110001, or by email at [email protected] and [email protected] and on before April 23, 2025.
• It states that the National River Traffic and Navigation System (NRTNS) will manage and regulate inland waterway traffic through vessel tracking, river information systems, and geofencing technologies for safety and efficiency.
• It states that all vessels on inland waters shall have operational Class B AIS, report their position to the VTMS centre, and communicate during emergencies for coordinated responses.
• It provides real-time navigational updates, including water levels, weather, and hazards, accessible to vessels with AIS and electronic charts.
