The Government of Maharashtra on March 21, 2025, issued the Maharashtra Prohibition of Smoking and Spitting Bill, 2025.
The following has been stated namely: -
• It states that smoking and spitting are prohibited in public places and public service vehicles, advertising tobacco products is banned, and selling tobacco or related items to individuals under 18 is not allowed.
• It states that the storage, sale, and distribution of tobacco products are prohibited within 100 meters of religious places, schools, colleges, or educational institutions, and owners or managers of public places shall display signs prohibiting smoking and spitting.
• It outlines that any person violating Sections 5, 6, 9, or 10 shall be liable for a fine of up to ₹1,000 for the first offense and ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 for subsequent offenses, while violations of Sections 7 and 8 may result in a fine of up to ₹1,000 for the first offense and up to three months of imprisonment or a fine between ₹5,000 and ₹10,000, or both, for subsequent offenses.
