The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) on June 23, 2025, issued directions under the Water (P&CP) Act, 1974, and the Air (P&CP) Act, 1981, regarding harmonization of classification of industrial sectors Red, Orange, Green, White & Blue categories issued by CPCB.
The following has been stated: -
•CPCB has withdrawn earlier directions of 2016 and issued a revised classification of 419 sectors under Red, Orange, Green, White & Blue categories.
•All SPCBs must adopt the new methodology immediately and process pending/future consent applications (CTE/CTO) accordingly.
•The revised categories will guide consent management, unit inventorization, siting criteria, monitoring, and environmental compensation.
•Classification shall not be linked to loan/finance sanctions.
