Labour ComplianceThe Government of Madhya Pradesh on September 08, 2025, enacted the Madhya Pradesh Shops and Establishments (Amendment) Act, 2025, which received the assent of the Governor on September 9, 2025. The Act aims to amend specific provisions of the Madhya Pradesh Shops and Establishments Act, 1958.

The amendment primarily revises the working hours calculation framework under Sections 11(2), 16(2), and 21(2) of the principal Act. The earlier limit of “six hours in any week” has been replaced with a new limit of “one hundred forty-four hours in any quarter.” This change introduces a quarterly-based calculation of working hours, thereby providing greater operational flexibility to employers while ensuring compliance with labour welfare norms.

The amendment is expected to simplify administrative processes, promote efficiency in workforce scheduling, and align the State’s regulatory framework with evolving employment practices. It came into force upon its publication in the Madhya Pradesh Gazette.
