The Ministry of Power (MoP) on December 23, 2025, issued an amendment to the older notification no. S.O. 4088(E), dated September 18, 2023, related to the changeover of the Chillers Star Labelling Programme from a Voluntary to a Mandatory Regime.
The following has been stated namely: -
• It has issued an amendment making the Chillers Star Labelling Programme mandatory instead of voluntary. The notification applies to all vapour compression type liquid chilling packages (chillers) manufactured or imported in India for space cooling purposes.
• It mandates compliance with IS 16590 standards and requires every model to meet the prescribed Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (ISEER) criteria.
• The amendment revises eligibility conditions, labelling requirements, and star rating thresholds for both water-cooled and air-cooled chillers.
• Updated star rating tables have been notified with defined validity periods, tightening minimum energy performance norms over time.
• From July 01, 2026, permission to display 1-Star labels under revised tables will be withdrawn to promote higher energy efficiency standards.
